U.S. Navy Remington Model 5 - Mill Typeface
Offered here, is a very special piece of history! This is a rare example of the classic Remington Model 5, special built for the U.S. Navy. This particular machine served in the Signal Corps, and was used for translating messages sent via morse code. This required both a special keyboard, and a special typeface!
What is a “Mill Typeface”? A mill is any typewriter outfitted to translate morse code. The typeface is the same for uppercase, and lowercase, and special keys were added to differentiate zeros from o’s, and ones from l’s. This was important, as it ensured there were no mistranslations in important communications.
Originally, there was a decal across the top plate which read, “U.S. Navy”. When the typewriter was brought home from the war, this decal was removed, and replaced by a dealer’s service tag. The uniquely named “Witch City Repairing Co.” of Salem, Massachusetts, have left their mark on this beautiful machine.
This machine has been fully cleaned, and serviced. I have combed over every inch of this machine to ensure it’s as nice as possible for its new home. It’s not 100% perfect, but certainly not bad for 83 years old! The scrapes, and chips in the paint remind you of the history it’s seen! Make your purchase in confidence, knowing you’re getting a ready to go typewriter. A classy collectible, which is ready to write at a moments notice.
